Custom Roll Stock Printing for Food, Coffee and Snack Packaging Lines
Hand-filling pouches works fine when you’re shipping fifty orders a week. Once you hit a few thousand, it gets painful. That’s usually when brands start asking us about custom roll stock.
So what is it? Picture your printed packaging film wound onto one big roll, like a giant roll of tape. You load it on your machine, and the machine shapes, fills and seals each pack by itself.
We’re Mylar Bags Online, and we print rollstock film for brands all over the USA. Some are tiny coffee roasters running their first machine. Others are snack companies packing all day long. Either way, the questions are pretty much the same, so we put the answers in one place.
What Is Custom Printed Roll Stock Film and How Does It Work?
Roll stock is flexible packaging film sold on a roll instead of as finished bags. Your machine pulls the film off the roll, folds it into shape, drops the product in, and seals it.
Most brands run it on one of two machine types. A vertical form fill seal machine (VFFS) is the one you’ll see packing chips, ground coffee, granola and powders. Horizontal machines (HFFS), including flow wrap setups, handle things like protein bars, cookies and candy.
Here’s the part people often miss. Every roll has a small printed block called an eyemark, or registration mark. A sensor on the machine watches for it so each cut lands in the right place. If the eyemark is off by even a little, your logo can end up sliced in half. That’s why we check it on every single file.
Why Growing Brands Switch From Pre-Made Pouches to Rollstock Packaging
We still love pre-made stand up pouches. For hand packing and small runs, they’re hard to beat.
But the math changes as you grow. With roll stock, you’re paying for film, not finished bags, so the cost per pack drops quite a bit. Automatic packaging machines also fill far faster than any person can. And storage gets easier. A handful of packaging film rolls fits on one shelf, while the same number of bags could fill a back room.
You also get options. The same film can become pillow packs, gusseted bags, stick packs or sachets, depending on how your machine is set up.
Choosing the Right Laminated Roll Stock Material and Barrier Layers
Most of what we print is laminated roll stock. That just means a few thin layers bonded together. The outside layer holds your print. The middle one keeps out air, moisture and light. The inside layer is what melts and seals.
A quick way to choose: ask what ruins your product.
Coffee goes stale from oxygen, so we usually suggest PET with a foil layer and LDPE inside. That’s also our go-to for jerky and supplements. Chips and candy do well with metallized PET, which gives that silver look and decent barrier at a lower price. For dry snacks that sell fast, a simple clear PET and LDPE build is often enough, and it’s still food grade film.
Going for a natural look? Kraft paper film works great for organic and craft brands. And if sustainability matters to your buyers, ask about recyclable film made from mono-material PE, or compostable film made from plant-based layers.
Digital, Flexographic and Rotogravure Printing for Custom Packaging Film
The print method you pick changes your price, your color quality and how much you need to order.
Digital printing is where most new brands start. There are no plates to make, so you can run a few flavors in small amounts. It’s the best route if you want a low minimum order quantity.
Flexographic printing sits in the middle. It’s a solid pick for medium and larger runs, with clean text and strong solid colors.
Rotogravure printing is for big volume. Setup costs more, but the images are very sharp and the price per unit drops a lot once you’re ordering large amounts.
Then there’s the finish. A matte finish feels soft and looks modern. A gloss finish makes colors jump off the shelf. Some of our customers mix the two, with a matte bag and a glossy logo, and it looks great.
Industries That Use Custom Roll Stock Packaging Every Day
Coffee is one of our biggest groups. Roasters need strong barrier film to keep beans fresh. (If you’re still packing by hand, our custom printed coffee bags might fit better for now.)
Snack makers use rollstock for those classic pillow packs. Candy brands run flow wrap film for bars and chews. Supplement companies love stick packs and sachets for single servings. We also print tough, puncture-resistant film for pet treats, cold-ready film for frozen foods, and peelable lidding film for trays and yogurt cups.
How to Order Custom Roll Stock That Fits Your Packaging Machine
This is the step that matters most. If the specs are wrong, the film won’t run, no matter how good it looks.
Before you reach out, check your machine manual or ask your operator for a few numbers. We’ll need the roll width, the repeat length (the distance from one eyemark to the next), and the core size, which is usually 3 or 6 inches. We’ll also ask about the largest roll your machine can hold, the unwind direction, and whether it makes a fin seal or a lap seal.
Send those along with your artwork and quantity. Our team reviews the file, places the eyemark, and sends you a digital proof. Nothing prints until you say yes.
Why Brands Across the USA Choose Mylar Bags Online for Rollstock Film
Honestly, it comes down to care. We read every file. We’ll call or email if something looks off instead of printing it and hoping for the best.
Our materials are food grade and FDA compliant. Digital printing keeps minimums low for smaller brands. Design help is free, including eyemark and barcode setup. And because we also make custom mylar bags, smell proof bags and custom printed pouches, your whole product line can match, whether it’s packed by hand or by machine.
Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Roll Stock
What’s the minimum order for custom rollstock?
It depends on how it’s printed. Digital lets you order much less than rotogravure. Tell us your quantity and we’ll point you to the right option.
Can I use roll stock without a machine?
Not really. It’s built for form fill seal machines. If you pack by hand, pre-made mylar pouches will save you a headache.
Is roll stock film recyclable?
Some of it is. Mono-material PE film is designed to be recycled, and we offer compostable options too.
How do I know it’ll run on my machine?
Send us your specs. We’ll match the width, repeat length, core size and eyemark to your setup and show it all on the proof.
